Top 6 End of Year Finance Tips

2-minute read
Set Yourself Up for Success Next Year

Another year has nearly passed, and as you begin considering your new year's resolutions it may also be worth looking back to ensure you are setting yourself up for success.

Before the end of the year consider making the following financial moves:

  1. Have a plan for next year. The holidays are a pricey time for a lot of people, but eventually the costs of celebrating the end of the year are behind you, and it is good to have a plan in place to make the most of your finances for the next year. This could be increasing your investments, improving your budget, or increasing your income. Future you will appreciate the effort you put in now to plan.
  1. Get your donations in now! If you are itemizing your taxes and want to make the most of your charitable donations, try and make them before the end of the year so they can appear on your next tax filing.
  1. Make sure you are up-to-date on your tax filings. You have 3 years from the original filing deadline to claim any refund you may be entitled to. If you got busy and missed a prior year, get it filed before your refund and/or stimulus is gone for good.
  1. Consider making your Roth conversions. If you want to do a backdoor Roth for 2022, or to convert funds and pay some taxes in a low income year, the deadline is December 31.
  1. Realize losses on investments. If you lost some money in the markets this year, harvesting some of those losses can save you hundreds of dollars on your tax return. Be sure to chat with your financial advisor if you need assistance with this one.
  1. Double check your estate documents. Do you have a will, trust, or beneficiary accounts? Think through them for a bit and make sure they still make sense. It is common to bring these up with clients and the last time they updated their beneficiaries was a decade and two kids ago. End of year is a perfect time to consider if a new chapter in your life comes with new obligations should you pass.

There’s no time like the present to improve your financial situation. The end of the year is often a time of celebration and reflection, so take a few minutes to celebrate this year’s financial accomplishments, and reflect on how you can strengthen your position in the future. If you would like assistance with any of the above items consider discussing them with your Pattern advisory team.
